North Parade Bridge
Several years ago I entered my first 'competition' since my student days and produced a quite horrible painting. Though exhibited it was quickly obliterated once the show finished. However, in preparation I made several studies of which this, along with some sketches and a small acrylic painting, survive. This small oil was painted over an existing sketch which hadn't worked either. The view has strong emotional and familial connections. It is North Parade Bridge, Bath looking towards a restaurant garden nestling in the crook between the bridge's base and a cellar wall. The original restaurant was envisioned and created by my father and his business partner back in the early 1970's. As a young boy I was deeply proud of what my dad had 'made'. As he and I get older those feelings, when present, have only intensified. Good memories enshrined in a small and personal painting.
