Botanic Gardens Late Summer

This painting was created, in situ, sometime in September 2010. I work in a variety of ways. Sometimes on-site where a painting is completed in one sitting or over several visits. Sometimes on-site and in the studio. This process allows me to respond more easily to the painting as an entity in itself rather than the landscape in view. Sometimes from sketches alone which can further liberate the painting process as you are a step further removed from the moment of observance. However, at this point you can lose the anchor of what you saw in the first instance. This is equally an opportunity– new possibilities–and a danger–Lack of clarity/focus. Whatever method the best paintings have a sense of completion with nothing left out, or in, that doesn't add to the whole.
