Painting Masters #2: Giorgio Morandi

Giorgio Morandi - A complete world.
For some, Giorgio Morandi is an unambitious artist constrained by his familiar environment and limited themes. However, the more you look the more you realise that a real and deep world exists in his still life painting. Indeed it is a far more expansive and complete world than appears in many painters of the 'grand gesture' and lofty concept. After a time the humility and relational strength of his images strike you as monumental. Subtle orchestrations of objects, space and tone hold our attention and invite us to become partakers of this oddly 'familiar' world–unhurried and yet deeply rewarding.
